Broughton’s “Wildfire” Premieres to Packed House in Manchester

On Saturday, January 24th, 2026, the renowned Black Dyke Band, under the direction of Professor Nicholas Childs, premiered Wildfire, Bruce Broughton’s new work for brass and percussion. Playing to a packed house at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester, England, the band spectacularly delivered on this difficult new work, which was inspired and influenced by the terrifying and destructive Los Angeles fires of 2025 and the many stories of human outreach, both heroic and tragic, that came to light.

From the Brass Band Blog, It’s Not a Trumpet, Liv Richardson writes, “Wildfire ignited with a snap of percussion and frantic muted cornets to paint a musical illustration of panic, as the fire sparks to life. The inferno grew as the band rose dynamically with dramatic cries from trombone, before it started to spread with the fast-paced, panicked cornet line.” The full review is currently on view at: https://www.itsnotatrumpet.com/post/review-black-dyke-band-at-the-2026-rncm-international-brass-band-festival

The score and parts will soon be available for purchase by the publisher.
