Bruce Broughton’s “Hornworks For 5 Horns And Tuba” To Be Premiered By The UCLA Bruin Horn Club

Bruce Broughton’s Hornworks for 5 horns and tuba is to be premiered by the UCLA Bruin Horn Club at Schoenberg Auditorium, UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music on Monday, May 4th. The piece was composed as a tribute to horn maker Jim Patterson of Patterson Hornworks, hence the title. Patterson recently commissioned Broughton to compose a set of theme and variations to be used on the Hornworks website, a unique use of music and image. The Hornworks piece which will be premiered was composed as an initial “test” for the combination of instruments, which consists of two descant horns, three horns and tuba.

The concert is a retrospective look at significant works composed or arranged for Los Angeles horn ensembles since 1960.

The UCLA Bruin Horn Club was formed by UCLA Adjunct Associate Horn Professor Brian O’Connor in 2002 and first performed in 2003. Bruin Horn Club consists of current and former UCLA Horn Students.
